Flame Arresters

According to definition given in the ISO 16852:2016 flame arresters are "safety devices fitted to openings of enclosures or to pipe work, and are intended to allow flow but prevent flame transmission”.
EN ISO 16852:2016 is a harmonized rule correlated to “ATEX” Directive that was adopted in the European Community in the year 2003.
According to ATEX Directive, flame arresters are defined “Protective systems” and as consequence they can be put onto the market by manufacturer after executing “Conformity Assessment Procedures of equipment”:

Costruzioni Meccaniche Lupi S.r.l. executed the following “Conformity Assessment Procedures” according to ATEX Directive 94/9/CE – ATEX, article 8, paragraph 1, letter a, (article 13, paragraph 1, letter a of the in force ATEX Directive 2014/34/UE):
EU-Type Examination Procedure according to Annex III: flame arresters must be tested and approved by a Notified Body who will issue an “EU-Type certificate” for the tested prototype.
Quality Assurance of the Production Process according to Annex IV: manufacturer shall operate an approved quality system for production and a Notified Body must verify the compliance and releases “Production Quality Assurance Notification”. Costruzioni Meccaniche Lupi S.r.l. applies the International Standard ISO/EC 80079-34:2012-03 (Explosive atmospheres – Part 34: Application of quality systems for equipment manufacture).
CERTIFICATIONS
All our flame arresters got the “EU-Type certificate”.
Furthermore, we got the “Production Quality Assurance Notification” since 2003; at present notification number is BVI 06 ATEX 0038 Q / Rev.3 issued by “Bureau Veritas” Notified Body.

Although flame arresters are manufactured in several ways the most common type is the one based on a corrugated ribbon design, whereby two metal strips – one crimped and one flat - are wound round a central core, the resulting tube banks being assembled in a ring and locked between two conical bodies, by tie rods and jacking bolts.
Our flame arresters follow this design.
Flame arresters shall be selected according to kind of installation. Our flame arresters are suitable for surface installations (group II) and for gases and vapors (group G). What follows is our manufacturing range:

End Of Line Deflagration Flame Arresters
In Line Birectional Deflagration Flame Arresters
In Line Birectional Detonation Flame Arresters

END-OF-LINE DEFLAGRATION FLAME ARRESTERS
Flame arresters belonging to this category are designed to prevent the transmission of a deflagration occurred outside a tank. They are fitted to openings like pressure-vacuum valves or free vents.
Limits for use of “End-of-line deflagration Flame Arresters“ are provided in the EN ISO 16852:2010.
We propose this kind of devices from size 2” up to 12”, in the following models:
848 STV / EEW / VVW / WWW:  to be fitted to our valves mod.53, 54, 56, 454, 456, 463 or together with free vents having “goose-neck” design (180° elbow).
Suitable for gas – vapors Ex-group IIB1
Suitable for operative temperature range -20 to +60 °C
Suitable for operative pressure range -0,2 to +0,1 barg
148 STV:  to be fitted to our valve mod.54, 53, 56.
Suitable for gas – vapors Ex-group IIA
Suitable for operative temperature range -20 to +120 °C
Suitable for operative pressure range -0,2 to +0,1 barg
48 STV:  to be fitted to our valve mod.54.
Suitable for gas – vapors Ex-group IIA
Suitable for operative temperature range -20 to +60 °C
Suitable for operative pressure range -0,2 to +0,1 barg
48 STV EOL: provided with a weather-hood is intended to be installed as a free-vent.
Suitable for gas – vapors Ex-group IIA
Suitable for operative temperature range -20 to +60 °C
Suitable for operative pressure range -0,2 to +0,1 barg
Our End-of-line deflagration flame arresters are available also with option “TT” that is with thermo-couples fitted in order to measure temperature. When equipped with this option our flame arresters are also EC-certified for “short time burning”.

IN-LINE BIRECTIONAL DEFLAGRATION FLAME ARRESTER
Flame arresters belonging to this category prevent the transmission of deflagration from both sides.
Deflagration is an explosion propagating at subsonic velocity.
Limits for use:
“The ratio of pipe length (between the potential ignition source and the flame arrester) and pipe diameter shall not exceed the tested ratio Lu/D” that is “50”.
Other limits for use of “Deflagration Flame Arresters“ are provided in the EN ISO 16852:2010.

IN-LINE BIRECTIONAL DETONATION FLAME ARRESTER
Flame arresters belonging to this category prevent the transmission of detonation from both sides.
Detonation is an explosion propagating at supersonic velocity and characterized by a shock wave.
Detonation flame arresters we produce are classified by standard EN ISO 16852:2010 “Type 4” (for stable detonation without restriction).
Limits for use of “Detonation Flame Arresters“ Type 4 are provided in the EN ISO 16852:2010 standard.
